About Posted Price
A free lookup of what hospitals themselves say they charge, built from the price files federal law requires them to publish.
What we index
109 hospitals in New York, New Jersey and the 25 largest US metro areas, about 230 common services each (CMS's 70 "shoppable services", emergency room visit levels, common imaging, lab tests, surgeries and hospital stays). Coverage grows as we find and read more files. Hospitals whose files we could not find, could not read, or whose sites block automated downloads are not listed.
How we collect it
- We read each hospital's
cms-hpt.txtfile (45 CFR 180.50(d)(6)) to find its current standard-charges file, then stream the file and keep only the rows for the services we track. Nothing else from the file is stored. - Our crawler identifies itself as
PostedPriceBot, honours robots.txt, waits at least two seconds between requests to the same site, and never works around a block. - Before a hospital is listed we check that the file names it: the ZIP code in the file's hospital address, or the hospital's name, must match the federal (CMS) record for that hospital.
- Files are re-checked weekly. Each page shows the date the hospital put on its file.
Using the figures
Hospital standard charges are public information the hospitals are required to publish. We show them as the hospital posted them, with the source file linked on every page. They are not quotes, and nothing on this site is medical, legal or financial advice.
